So why a blog?
I have worked in the IT Industry for a long time and over the years have accessed a number of blogs to either solve a specific problem or to share with colleagues or just to learn from. So it feels like maybe it’s time to have a stab myself and maybe even help out someone else. Kind of paying it forward.
I’m starting it with few expectations, I don’t know how much time it will take or what commitment I can provide. Or how much I’ll enjoy it or even how many people will read.
I’ll try to keep it relevant and entertaining. It will be my opinion.
Where is it hosted?
Well I have this “spare” EC2 instance in AWS and I wanted to do some self learn on working with AWS and setting up a web server.
I’ve kind of had a domain, albeit not really, since the early 1990s when I became a customary of the now defunct Demon Internet. That was back ion the heady days of the internet when, for a tenner a month, you could get dial up internet access and email over your analogue telephone line. I had the “domain” ianrae.demon.co.uk with email addresses like ian@ianae.demon.co.uk. These domains (any *.demon.co.uk) are now defunct I believe. I must have been a customer of Demon Internet for close to 20 years until I purchased the domain ianrae.me and hosted it initially with Web Hosting Scotland who were owned and operated by the entrepreneurial Helmut Watterott.
When Helmut closed down his Web Hosting Scotland (and Media Slave) businesses I moved to AWS. Hence the “spare” EC2 instance which has been gathering virtual dust for too long now.
What’s it running with?
This blog is running on WordPress. I did look at a Ghost offering but with the minimum EC2 offering, Ghost was not running.
I do intend to blog about the set up process shortly.
What Will I Cover?
I intend to have a leaning to technical topics. As mentioned, good old Google has brought me to a number of pages explaining how to do something and maybe this site can help someone else that’s trying (e.g.) to set up a WordPress site on EC2.
Conclusion
That’s about it for now; I hope this does gather momentum and become useful in time.
