With the benefit and prejudice of hindsight, these reviews I feel inevitably colour the review based on the final position. Where this post is different is that I will update it as we go throughout the season and only publish at the end. The purpose of this blog post is to capture the swings of emotion and hope as Dundee progress through the season, to capture that journey in something closer to real-time. It will be interesting to see how this form of season review compares with other posts.

Scottish football seasons are quite long, there are 38 league matches, cup games (the mini league format in play this season gives 4 guaranteed matches in the league cup plus at least one in the Scottish Cup), and pre-season friendlies to take into account. I’m starting the blog post in late June 2025 and the season is not planned to end until last May 2026. That’s the best part of 11 months from start to end.

Off-Season; a new Head Coach

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
The off-season started with a bang. (click to expand…)

The off-season started with a bang. After our last match, a 2-0 away victory at St Johnstone, and a very enjoyable Player of the Year dinner, manager Tony Docherty was sacked on Monday 19-May. Tony had been at the PotY dinner and there had not been any explicit sign that has was about to leave; as it transpired he already knew he had a meeting with the board (at least with John Nelms) on the Monday morning so he must have known what was about to happen.

Looking back on last season, Tony’s departure was not a total shock. We escaped the dreaded playoffs on the very last game and many of the defensive problems of Tony’s first season had not improved. The timing certainly was a surprise as a hungover Ian tried to process the news that morning over a hotel breakfast. Again, in retrospect, Nelms had made his decision and what better time to clear the decks than the morning after the last game of the season?

We had to wait until the 2nd of June before knowing who would replace Tony, and again it was a surprise when Steven Pressley was announced. My initial reaction was that “Elvis” was too much of an Arab, but that we would need to get behind him. I do feel that he’ll be on a short leash with the Dundee fans (as indeed Tony would have been) so time will tell. His interviews have been generally well received and I think the general sentiment amongst Dundee fans is a little more supportive than when the news first broke. Two friendlies played (against Arbroath and Brechin) and two victories have helped.

I’m going to hold off on a squad update until closer to the league season. Mainly since I’m hoping that we have a few new signings to come.

The competitive season starts on Saturday with the League Cup group stages. Playing Airdrie, Alloa, Bonnyrigg Rose and Montrose should offer insights into how the new team will gel. We’re obviously expecting to top the group; indeed to win all 4 games. Beyond that, it’s hard to see how the team will perform. I have lower expectations than last season, top-6 will be great but I’m not expecting it. I’m hoping we won’t “just” squeak into 10th on the last game of the season again.

</details>

Section completed on Wednesday 9-July.

League Cup Group Stages

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
We played 4 League Cup games. (click to expand…)

Dundee 0 – 1 Airdrie. Following a couple of positive pre-season friendly wins against Arbroath and Brechin, we left Glasgow on a warm summer day for my first trip of the new season. Unfortunately, we lost 1-0, conceding a poor goal with last season’s defensive frailties exposed again. My overall impression was that we looked cumbersome and too slow to play the ball about giving Airdrie plenty of time to mark up. An uninspiring start to the season.

Alloa 1 – 0 Dundee. And it got worse. An even worse performance saw Dundee lose again to lower league opposition; a result which saw us out of the League Cup. Elvis rung the changes but in my eyes it didn’t really make a difference to the pace of play which was too slow again.

Bonnyrigg Rose 1 – 3 Dundee. Finally Dundee scored (a scrappy goal, but a goal) and indeed won a game against a team who had just been relegated from the SPFL. Playing at Ferguson Park, Dundee really only took control in the latter stages, arguable after Bonnyrigg began to tire. Bonnyrigg showed no fear and scored a pretty good goal themselves, I actually felt that their style of play helped Dundee play with more tempo themselves. It’s hard to be too excited after a win against a team from the fifth tier but if we’d won 6-0 after those first two games it would have been hard to be excited too. Looking at it another way, if we’d open the campaign with this game it would likely have been looked on as a professional result.

Dundee 5 – 0 Montrose. A game which I was only able to watch on Dee TV. Montrose had decent spells of possession and their fans will feel aggrieved at the severity of the scoreline if the not the result. A winning end to the cup campaign overshadowed by the overall disappointing campaign and leaving fans with lots of concern going into the new season.

It looked like these games were played as pre-season perhaps to allow Elvis to assess his players and try them out in different positions. Overall performances were not good enough and whatever hope we had after the off season has pretty much evaporated. Whilst there was some improvement in the last two games, it was against lower league opposition and it’s hard to see a pattern emerge to show how we will play effective football. It looks like being a long season ahead with many fans expecting a relegation fight.

</details>

Section completed on 31st July.

August Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
In July we played four games; two at home and two away. (click to expand…)

Match 1; Dundee 1 – 2 Hibs, Sunday 3-August. There was a certain amount of fear before this game, Hibs had been perhaps the stand-out team last season, and following the less then impressive League Cup campaign I was worried that we’d get a real doing. In fact, we gave a creditable performance; the first Hibs goal came from a deflection in the box. truth be told, the defence looked decent and perhaps of Premiership quality. Strange to walk away from a home defeat feeling more confident than when we went in but that’s a reflection of how poor our start was.

Match 2; Rangers 1 – 1 Dundee, Saturday 9-August. the build up for this game had some ill-judged or demeaning comments from Lyall Cameron. For some reason Rangers presented him to the press before their Tuesday evening European game, unfortunately, albeit under some goading from the West Coast Media, Lyall was less than complimentary about his time at Dundee. I’m a bit split on these comments, on one hand he’s a young laddie, on the other hand it’s not hard to be professional and there’s a certain suspicion around why he was paraded in front of the media in the week of first game against his previous club. Turning to the game, Dundee played well. Yes it was a defensive effort, but we looked organised, committed, strong, fit. We were unlucky to only get the one point with the refs not slow to give a 91st minute penalty to Rangers; a penalty of the soft variety.

Match 3; Kilmarnock 0 – 0 Dundee, Saturday 23-August. I didn’t watch this game so closely due to being in Helsinki and busy getting ready to go out. Another away game where the defence played credibly limiting the home team to handful of chances. We scored a goal chalked off, correctly, for offside, but again looked organised. So two credible away draws, team looking organised, maybe Elvis is making progress…

Match 4; Dundee 0 – 2 United, Sunday 31-August. Well what a disaster. Losing to them is bad enough but we looked without spirit, passion, energy and almost any attacking intent. That looked like a poor United team, or perhaps we just played out defensive duties well, but the Dundee performance was just insipid. Getting bear is one thing, not showing spirit or fight is another; hard to excuse.

In summary the first 4 games showed some organisation, perhaps we’ll be a hard team to beat, and hopefully we’ll not concede so many simple or so many late goals. On the attacking side we look poor in comparison. Simon Murray is perhaps not yet fully recovered from his knee injury sustained against Montrose. The new signings whilst showing bits of promise don’t yet seem to be gelling in a way which will give us goals. One month in and still early days but it’s still looking like a season fighting relegation.

</details>

Section completed on 13-September.

September Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
In September we played only three games. (click to expand…)

Match 5. Dundee 1 – 1 Motherwell. Played in front of a small crowd at Dens, we really played a game of two halves here. After a slow start, Motherwell really dominated the first half playing some nice football. We went in at half time one goal down with a very unhappy home support. Following on from the derby, this was another 45 minutes of disappointing football. All changed in second half, largely helped by the introduction of Cameron Congreve, on loan from Swansea. Cam played wide right and started positively running at the Motherwell defence. This seemed to catch on across the park and we equalised shortly after the restart with Luke Graham nodding in a cross from Cam. Despite some good chances, we were unable to get more from the game, the ending of which was marred by the sending off of Yan Dhanda. A much improved performance second half though was welcomed by the home support.

Match 6. Dundee 3 – 2 Livingston. This game was followed from the Algarve DSC. We stated well, following on from the second 45 in the prior week with Congreve again looking impressive and setting up two goals; one for Simon Murray just before half time and the second for Joe Westley. Latterly we fell out of the game a little and Livi pulled back level; the first from a Clark Robertson own-goal and the second from a penalty conceded by Clark. There was a little doubt over this penalty; Robertson seemed to play the ball cleanly enough and the Livi player I felt ran into the collision but no VAR. In the final moments of the match, Livi should really have scored a third but a combination of a weak finish and a “worldly” save from Jon McCracken kept it at 2-2. Dundee broke up-field from that incident and, as Charlie Reilly broke into the box he was brought down. Penalty. There was a lengthy VAR review, including the referee being called to monitor, before the penalty was confirmed. Callum Jones scored the winning goal. Excellent. Our first win of the season, rightly celebrated. However, if that Livi chance had gone in the atmosphere would have been so different – we were close to losing a game from a two goal lead.

Match 7. St Mirren 1 – 0 Dundee. A short trip to Paisley, with a definite autumnal feel. I felt that this match was pretty close with both team cancelling themselves out. St Mirren scored in the first half, whilst they had some possession they weren’t looking particularly dangerous. Dundee had some nice football too including a long period eventually resulting in a somewhat weak shot from Drey Wright. We didn’t really create much either and seemed to be missing Simon Murray, absent from this match with an illness.

Looking back on the month, we have a victory under our belts, and are sitting in 9th place. Most fans will be happy with that position should we able to retain it. It still feels, however, that we haven’t really found our shape or tactics. At times we’ve been quite negative and trying to play without the ball, however there are some bright sparks in there. The next few games are important with a trip away to bottom of the table Aberdeen, a visit from title favourites Celtic and a tricky away tie at Falkirk all to take place in October. Hearts, Hibs and Rangers all feature in November before we complete the first round of fixtures.

</details>

Section completed on 1-October.

October Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
In October, we again played three games. (click to expand…)

Match 8. Aberdeen 4 – 0 Dundee. On Sunday 5-October we travelled to the win less Aberdeen, in fact an Aberdeen team who had not scored a league goal. Simon Murray returned to the line-up as did Jan Dhanda following his suspension. Overall we therefore started with a pretty attacking line-up. It did not take long since we were 3 down inside half an hour. Aberdeen seemed to run through our midfield all first half virtually unchallenged. In truth, we could have conceded five before half time. A poor performance overall, Dundee were outclassed and our poor run at Pittodrie continues.

Match 9. Dundee 2 – 0 Celtic. Talking of poor runs, the reigning champions visited Dens for a Sunday noon game. I viewed much of this game from the Brussels DSC with a Hibby on way home from Bruges. Dundee’s stall was somewhat predictable, defend in depth at time and play on the break. In the first half I thought we were clearly the better team scoring two goals made by Cameron Congrieve (one from a header by Clark Robertson and the second just before half time from <s>Joe Westley</s> Cameron Carter-Vickers). There were a number of other chances where we could have scored. Second half was more of a back to the wall performance, VAR stepping in to rule out a Penalty to Celtic, albeit Simon Murray passed up a great chance to make it 3. So we beat Celtic at Dens for the first time in 37 years, keeping a clean sheet in the process. What a result!

Match 10. Falkirk 2 – 1 Dundee. Our first league trip to the new Falkirk Stadium although we have been there on League Cup business a few years ago (one of the coldest evenings watching football ever). This has to go down as a missed opportunity, we started strongly and deservedly went ahead through that Congrieve/Robertson combination again. This week it was the turn of VAR to stuff things up by not awarding a clear penalty in the first half. That changed the game since we could have been 2-0 up potentially with Falkirk down to 10 men. Second half, Falkirk changed things up a bit and put us under some pressure, deservedly equalising (after hitting the woodwork). We kind of stabilised late on and the game looked like it was heading for a draw until a wicked bounce of the ball seemed to take out and bamboozle the Dundee midfield where the defence parted to allow the débutante Connor Allan to win the game for The Bairns. A frustrating end to the day after playing so well first half we didn’t adapt to the changes made by Falkirk second half. At half time we were in third position in the league, that dropped to third bottom at full time.

A frustrating end to the month. We are playing very inconsistently just now; a historic win against Celtic was bookended by a loss to Aberdeen when we were outclassed and a frustrating loss to Falkirk where we should have at least drawn. Following midweek games we are now second bottom, although the league is still tight. Cam Congrieve has emerged as a real attacking threat, Hamilton and Digby appear to offer some strength and grit in midfield. On the negative side, the defence is still shipping too many goals and we are struggling in open play with Simon Murray looking a little out of sorts. A tough run of games ahead: away to both Hearts and Hibs with Rangers at home in between. Whilst the league is still tight, that’s not the run of games where you would predict us picking up many points.

Played in October

Won

Drawn

Lost

For

Against

Points

3

1

0

2

3

6

3

</details>

Section completed on 31-October.

November Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
In November, we played four games. (click to expand …)

Match 11. Hearts 4 – 0 Dundee. We visited Tynecastle for our first game against the league leaders of the season. A fixture which also would complete the first round of games. Dundee started playing a 3-4-3 formation with Billy Koumetio getting his first start of the season in place of Luke Graham. Dundee started reasonably for the first 30 minutes and maybe had the best chance with a Cameron Congrieve effort being tipped over the bar. Hearts, however, were able to make use of the space in the corners behind the wide right players and it was from such a move when that DAB Lawrence Shankland opened the scoring. Hearts made it 2-0 before the break and then 3-0 shortly into the second half. A late goal made it 4. A disappointing afternoon for Dundee; once we went behind, we didn’t seem to have a plan B. Substitutes seemed to be like for like which seemed to indicate that Elvis was unable or unwilling to make tactical changes.

Match 12. Dundee 0-3 Rangers. More changes at the back with an injured Clark Robertson replaced by Luke Graham arguable unlucky to be dropped last week. Simon Murray was on the bench, I felt that this was bit strange, he looked pretty frustrated when substituted at Tynecastle. I was unable to make this game, suffering from excesses at Murrayfield the day before, so watched on <s>Rangers TV</s> Sky Sports. Unlike the game against the other cheek last month, Dundee went behind early, although only after Rangers save a free kick from Ethan Hamilton. The first goal was a header from the smallest player on the park near the six yard box. The second from a midfield run where Dundee seemed to give Rangers all the space and time to waltz up the park. A frustrating start; poor defending from a corner – I’m not a fan of zonal marking – and a second goal taking advantage of some physical weakness in our play. To Dundee’s credit we changed the formation a bit moving to more of a four at the back which appeared to stabilise things and at least we didn’t get overrun. However it did feel a little like Rangers were comfortable and taking the opportunity for an extended training session. Indeed it was no surprise when they confirmed their 3-0 win with a 3rd in injury time. I suppose you can’t complain too much losing to Rangers at home, but it was the manner of the defeat; the way that we played which was the most worrying.

Match 13. Hibs 2-0 Dundee. Following the Scotland heroics at Hampden, Dundee were back in the capital again for a game against the inform Hibernian. Dundee switched to a four at the back again and played Yan Dhanda from the start. Hibs however dominated much of the game, easing into a 2-0 lead after an hour. Dundee looked slow in possession and, again, the game felt a bit like it was being played at training speed. We played a wee bit better after going 2-0 down and the Hibs goalie (sadly not signed for Stranraer) pulled off two blinders and the under-used Charlie Reilly really had to do better late on. So another loss, four on the bounce, and a lot of disquiet in the Dundee support. Open calls for the sacking of Pressley and a lot of hostility towards John Nelms were all over social media.

Match 14. Dundee 3-1 St Mirren. Back to Dens for the visit of The Buddies from Paisley. I was unable to attend this one so watched Dee TV. The opening minutes began to see St Mirren taking the advantage, despite some Dundee chances, arguably St Mirren should have scored. Just before the half hour, Clark Robertson passed the ball to the St Mirren striker (Mikael Mandron) who passed the ball into the Dundee net past a somewhat flat-footed McCracken. A terrible goal to lose, and the few Dundee fans were not slow to tell the manager to GTF. I think we were all expecting the team to fold at this point but the opposite happened. 3 minutes later, Joe Westley drove at the St Mirren defence with Jan Dhanda’s shot coming off Alex Gogic to equalise. Less then 10 minutes later, we were in front following a ferocious strike from Drey Wright. Playing largely on the break, Dundee almost killed the match off at the start of the second half, but Joe Westley made it 3-1 on the brink of injury time to send the Dundee support home happy. What a difference a win makes! Especially against teams in and around you in the table. This game could have gone so wrong, that it didn’t speaks loudly of the spirit in the squad.

Looking back this was always going to be a tough month. But the way Dundee played the first three games was particularly disheartening. The Dundee support (myself included) were calling for Elvis to get the sack. The team looked out of sorts, zonal marking at corners was giving me the fear, off the pitch the half season tickets were announced at an expensive price, so all was not well at Dens Park. And then things changed on Saturday. Now we need to build on that win and try to get some momentum. Skipping over the next match (away to Martin O’Neil’s Celtic), we have Aberdeen, Falkirk and Kilmarnock at home with trips to Livingston and Motherwell in December. An important run of games where you can be confident that we can pick up points. Also games against teams near us in the table.

Dundee finish November in 9th; four points above bottom (Livingston) but eight below 6th(Falkirk).

Played in November

Won

Drawn

Lost

For

Against

Points

4

1

0

3

3

10

3

</details>

Section completed on 2-December.

December Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
In December, we played six games. (click to expand…)

Match 15. Celtic 1-0 Dundee. As always, trips to Parkhead to play the champions are filled with dread. Coming from an impressive home victory the view here was “anything but a gubbing”. Celtic scored early and there was a worry that things were going to get worse for Dundee. However, we held out for a long period. On 60 minutes, Elvis changed things a bit sending on Ash Hay for Simon Murray as well as Billy Koumetio and Callum Jones for Cam Congreve and Yan Dhanda. The formation changed and Dundee looked dangerous from time to time with Ash Hay’s pace impressing, Luke Graham had a chance for a late equaliser but we left Parkhead with zero points again.

Match 16. Dundee 1-3 Aberdeen. Could we build on the momentum from the previous home game? Sadly the answer was “no” as Dundee handed the game to Aberdeen with two mistakes from the previously dependable Ethan Hamilton. Two down at half time Dundee looked the better side second half, but as was mentioned on Sportscene, it’s easy to play when 2-0 down. Astley got one goal back from a corner and we pressed for an equaliser only to concede a third. Another loss. Looking for crumbs of comfort, at least but we played some football which is maybe a slight improvement, but it amounted to nothing in the end.

Match 17. Livingston 2-2 Dundee. In atrocious conditions we visited the bottom club. Playing with the wind in the first half, Yan Dhanda and Cam Congrieve put us 2-0 up after only 20 minutes. Oh, if only we’d continued playing when we had the upper hand but the team seemed to sit back thinking maybe that the game was done. Livi had a couple of chances in the first half and really dominated the second with the wind helping them. Sure enough they levelled with 12 minutes to play. At that point either team could have won although Livi edged the play. This was an incredibly frustrating game, we started so well but, for the second time this season let Livi back into the game after taking a two goal lead. Both goals were poor with Cam Congreve guilty on the first goal of letting Livi play through him; we are the team who concedes the fewest goals and really needed Cam to take down the Livi player, even at the cost of the booking. Intelligent teams do concede fouls on turnover ball; it’s better to concede the foul and use the break in play to get back into shape than run the risk of conceding on a break.

Match 18. Motherwell 1-0 Dundee. I was unable to watch this game, so impressions are limited to highlights and reports. It’s not so much the loss to high flying Motherwell, but the manner of the loss. Dundee defended well in general and limited Motherwell’s ability to get forward. However, we created very little in response – 8 touches in the opposition box. The goal we conceded too was not good; despite having 8 defenders in the box, the Motherwell player just had too much time to head into the far corner. A disappointing game and our poor away form continues.

Match 19. Dundee 1-0 Falkirk. Back at home, Dundee completed an impressive victory against Falkirk. Playing uphill in the first half we stated strongly with Yogane in particular causing issues for The Bairns. The ref issued a red card to the Falkirk skipper in the first half for a dangerous tackle on Ash Hay, he overturned this once he looked at the monitor. VAR then helped by spotting a handball in the dying moments of the half and Yan Dhanda sent Scott Bain the wrong way to put us one up at the interval. Second half Falkirk had more of the ball but struggled to create much clear cut – their first and only shot on target was in the last 10 minutes. The ref had a bit of nightmare, not giving us a foul when they took down Hay from behind again, this time Simon Murray got angry, hacked down the Falkirk player and got a red card. It was good to see Dundee bringing players down on turnover ball, Simon was too reckless and kicked out sadly. Still a very good home victory for Dundee.

Match 20. Dundee 2-1 Kilmarnock. We closed out 2025 with back to back home wins. Dundee played pretty well in this game and were unlucky to go one down following a failed attempt to stop a quick free kick and a mistake from Luke Graham. We continued to create chances, however, and after the break levelled it up with a goal from Ash Hay set up by Yogane’s cross and a header back across from Charlie Reilly. Reilly then gave Dundee a deserved lead following a rapid break. Really we should have won this one more comfortably but back to back wins, and against teams closer to our league position was a great way to end 2025.

Looking back, December was always going to be an important month; we finished a comparatively easy run of games with two victories and I think we’re all feeling slightly more positive about the team. Perhaps more importantly, we are playing better, Ash Hay seems to be a good option leading the line and with Congreve, Dhanda and Yogane we have players with pace who can create. The season only gets tighter from here; we start 2026 down the road, and only have one home game in January – and that’s against the league leaders Hearts. Away trips to St Mirren, Rangers and Killie (cup) await. We’ll need to keep up the recent momentum.

Dundee finish 2025 in 9th position; 10 points above Livi (bottom) and six above Killie (11th). Indeed, only six behind 6th.

Played in December

Drawn

Lost

For

Against

Points

6

2

1

3

6

8

7

</details>

Section completed on 31-December.

January Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
In January, we played five games, four in the league and one in the Scottish Cup. (click to expand…)

Match 21. Dundee United 0-1 Dundee. Our new year started with a visit across the road. This was really a more emphatic win than the scoreline indicates. Dundee had an impressive first half with the front three of Congreve, Hay and Yogane causing the United defence lots of problems; Yan Dhanda was enjoying the space behind too. However the best chances fell to Koumetio and Ashley, so it was only in the dying seconds of the first half when Ash Hay put Dundee in front. The TV cameras capture a particularly beautiful angle of that goal as Hay’s shot was always going in at the far post. Second half the Arabs came into it a bit more, including forcing a great save from John McCracken. Pressley brought on Samuels for Congreve changing to a back 5 with Drey Wright moving to right wing back, this change nullified United’s attacking to a great extent and Dundee always looked like we could add to our tally. Great performances from the team across the park and notably Elvis out coached Goodwin from the off and made better changes too. Excellent start to the year.

Match 22. Dundee 0-1 Hearts. The visit of the league leaders meant that Dhanda was ineligible to play. Dundee started with similar attacking style from the derby, but Hearts took the lead in controversial circumstances. Fin Robertson was harshly adjudged to have fouled, as Dundee players moved into defensive positions, Hearts took a quick free kick, nowhere near the spot of the offence with a moving ball and scored. As unfair as this felt, there was again some naivety from Dundee, Fin arguing with the ref instead of getting into position, Yogane for throwing the ball to the Hearts player instead of back to the goalie. Dundee continues to press and the referee sent off the Hearts goalie just before half time for bringing down Yogane when through on goal. Dundee had, as expected, the bulk of the second half with cross after cross into the Hearts box, all to no avail. Dundee threw on attackers and Emile Acquah almost levelled it at the death but for a fantastic save from Craig Gordon. Disappointing to lose against 10 men but a much better performance than the insipid 4-0 defeat at Tynecastle in November.

Scottish Cup 4th Round. Kilmarnock 1-2 Dundee. Another away cup tie to premiership opposition saw Dundee put in an impressive performance against the Neil McCann and Billy Dodds managed Kilmarnock. Dundee went behind early following a training ground corner with the Kilmarnock full back rifling a shot home from outside the box. We really should have been ahead before this with only the woodwork saving the home team, however Dundee did not alter our play and continued to look good. It took until the second half before Ash Hay leathered the ball home from just inside the box to equalise. Kilmarnock had a man sent off for a second yellow foul on Yogane and it felt like there could be only one winner. As indeed proved to be the case when the Kilmarnock keeper dropped the ball at Drey Wright’s foot to score the winner. A really good performance from Dundee, beating Kilmarnock for the second time in quick succession again after going behind and fighting back.

Match 23. Rangers 3-0 Dundee. Our second visit to Castle Greyskull this season was against a much different Rangers team under Danny Rohl; the form team in the league. Dundee had a lot of possession in this game but didn’t create much. Level at half time we had some hope only for “Penalty to Rangers” to be issued at the start of the second half. To be fair to the ref, Kevin (never a popular name in Castle Greyskull) Clancy, it did look like a foul live, maybe the shot had been made and the ball was gone but I can see why it was given. Dundee continued to have possession second half and the game was quite open for the last 20 minutes or so. Two late goals flattered Rangers. So another visit to Govan with nothing to show from it, frustrating but has to be put in context; dropping points to either one of the Glasgow giants when they are firing on full speed is not a hugely damaging result.

Match 24. St Mirren 0-0 Dundee. A trip to Paisley to play against the team directly below us. Debut for Brad Halliday and a first start for Joel Cotterill who came on late against Rangers. This is probably summed up as two points dropped. First half saw good chances missed by either team. St Mirren had a player sent off for following through on Brad Halliday’s ankle. Despite a man advantage, like against Hearts, we never really pressed our advantage. So feels a little like two points dropped.

Looking back, we continue to look a more settled team this month. Pressley’s system seems to be starting to work, against United and Kilmarnock for example, we certainly looked dangerous and can play with a lot of pace. The fans are buying in more to Elvis as a manager now, after telling him to GTF when we played St Mirren at Dens. Progressing into the 5th round of the cup is a positive too (although only rewarded with an away tie at Celtic Park).

We finish January 9th in the league; 12 clear of Livi in bottom and 6 clear of Kilmarnock in second bottom. 10 points off sixth (Falkirk).

Played in January

Won

Drawn

Lost

For

Against

Points

4

1

1

2

1

4

4

</details>

Section completed on 2nd February.

February Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
We played five games in February, four in the league and one in the Scottish Cup. (click to expand…)

Scottish Cup Fifth Round. Celtic 2-1 Dundee (after extra time). Ultimately a heart breaking visit to Celtic Park with Celtic snatching a late, late equaliser and then going on to win the tie in extra time. Dundee, with a noisy travelling support, kept the champions at bay for much of the game. Ethan Hamilton, following good interchange with Cam Congreve scored an absolute beezer to put Dundee into the lead. We had some chances to go two goals up but Celtic equalised with literally the last kick of the ball to take the tie into extra time. To make it worse, they scored early in extra time with what proved to be the winner. In many ways this was an encouraging performance, it’s just so disappointing to be close but to still exit the cup in February. The gypsy curse strikes again!

Match 25. Falkirk 1-0 Dundee. On a horribly wet winter’s evening we travelled to high flying Falkirk for the second time this season. Dundee played well for much of this game without converting. We started the second half a little flat and Falkirk took the lead with perhaps some question marks on the keeping. Dundee continued to press and got a late penalty to salvage a deserved draw. Unfortunately, Yan Dhanda’s shot was wide. Some frustration tonight with our inability to convert possession and good play into goals.

Match 26. Dundee 2-2 Livingston. On Valentine’s Day we welcomed Livingston back to Dens for the second time this season. For the third time this season we went 2 goals against Livi up but were pegged back to 2-2. Two early gaols from Dundee appeared to put us in charge but Livi came back into it and equalised from a mistake by John McCracken before half time. The second half was a tamer affair although we nearly won it at the death when a Cameron Congreve shot just didn’t quite slip under the Livi keeper. Again a creditable performance for much of the game but only a draw. We still have only one (that one) league win in this calendar year.

Match 27. Aberdeen 2-3 Dundee. At times a flawed performance this was in the end a fantastic victory. Dundee started slowly and waves of Aberdeen attacks resulted in them taking the lead with perhaps the goalkeeper looking to do better. Dundee calmed things down and gradually became the better team, equalising through a Simon Murray penalty only confirmed following a dreadfully long VAR review. Before half time Dundee were 2 up against the 10 men via Joel Cotterill’s first goal for Dundee. Dundee played the ball about second half without finding that killer third goal. In fact Aberdeen equalised via a free kick – the award was dubious but the free kick up an over the wall wasn’t going to be saved by anyone. As we continued to press, so we got the goal we deserved and what a goal from Ethan Hamilton. It’s maybe too early to nominate goal of the season, and it’s not against the DABs, but this was an absolute screamer. So we left Pittodrie with 3 points for the first time in 22 years, a fully deserved victory.

Match 28. Dundee 3-3 Hibernian. A rematch of the first game of the season saw Dundee play a much improved game from the toothless performance back in August. A strong start from Dundee unfortunately saw us falling behind in 10 minutes. We then equalised from The Best in Scotland (captain Simon Murray) and went 2-1 up in 72 minutes from a deft Luke Graham touch. Last week we saw a bad side of VAR with an ridiculously long review leading the penalty award; this week the threat of VAR robbed us of celebrating a goal, Simon looked offside for his equaliser, and I think everyone was expecting VAR to chalk it off. I don’t like VAR, to me it robs the fans in the stadium from the immediate, in this case joyous, reaction to live sports. Sadly our defence then conceded two goals to put us behind as the game entered injury time. Only for Cameron Congrieve to score a screamer with the last touch of the ball. A draw is the least we deserved from this game, although Hibs fans might be saying the same. Again Dundee are playing some attractive football and that’s scored three goals back to back a big improvement for the team who have the second worst scoring record in the league.

Highlight of this month was the away victory at Pittodrie (and that goal); the frustrating draw to Livi and loss away to Falkirk are a reflection of how much we have improved. Congrieve and Yogane provide threats out wide every game, Simon Murray has returned to form this month (4 goals in 3 games) and we have injured players (Hay, Westley and Halliday) returning to the squad. We can look ahead to March, home games against Motherwell and the DABs and a visit to Tynecastle, with some optimism.

We finish February 9th in the league (same as last month), 14 clear of Livi in bottom place (was 12 clear) and 7 clear of Kilmarnock in 11th place (was 6). This was a re-arranged game and brought high flying Motherwell to face an unchanged Dundee team. This was a great performance from The Dark Blues; we took the lead in the first half with Tony Yogane’s first goal for the team, fittingly a close rage almost a deflection, in contrast to his mesmerising wing play. Motherwell equalised late on through a debatable free kick, but Dundee sealed the victory with three substitutes Westley, Hay and then Finn Robertson finishing off a fine move. This was a great victory for Dundee, some good play, good substitutes, we played like a good team with some decent squad depth.

Match 30. Dundee 2-2 Dundee United. The third derby of the season came with Dundee on their best run so far, and we went into it with higher expectations than the first derby way back on the 31st August when an insipid performance saw the DABs win easily. A different story today saw an unchanged side compete against United and a more balanced first half as a result. Unfortunately they finished the half strongly and seemed to carry that momentum into the second. They took the lead following an unfortunate penalty against Simon Murray and a back post header put them two up. Deep into injury time, we pulled one back through Ash Hay at the back post three feet out from a Finn Robertson corner. We almost didn’t bother celebrating since this felt like a consolation goal, however the team on the park never gave up. Almost from the kick off Dundee got a free kick and, with John McCracken up, a well flighted cross from Finn Robertson was turned into his own net by lifelong Arab Ross Graham. Queue absolute limbs in the Dundee support and loud songs of “2-0 and you fucked it up” bringing back memories of an evening at the dump when James McPake scored The Goal Which Started Their Downfall.

Match 31. Hearts 1-0 Dundee. Dundee travelled to the league leaders and made changes with Westley, Hay and Halliday coming in from Cotterill, Samuels and Murray. Dhanda was ineligible to play and was replaced by Finn Robertson. Dundee played well in an even first half low on chances. The second was similar although Hearts scored the only goal of the game with a back post header from a free kick on the left. Hearts were reduced to 10 men for the last few minutes but we could not get the equaliser, despite another late appearance from John McCracken in the opposition’s penalty box. Compared to our last visit to Tynecastle on the 1st November, a 4-0 defeat, this was a better performance. However results elsewhere did not go our way so we remain in the fight for the playoff spot.

A bit of a mixed month, victory against Motherwell really showed the team building from the February results. However we were less convincing in the performances against United and Hearts, generating fewer chances in these games.

Three games in March; a win a draw and a defeat. We finish the month in 8th (up from 9th), 17 clear of Livi in bottom spot (was 14), 2 clear of Aberdeen and 5 clear of both Kilmarnock and St Mirren. For the second visit of Celtic, again on a Sunday to satisfy the demands of TV, this time on Easter Sunday. Celtic started strongly and it was no surprise when they went ahead in under 10 minutes. However, Dundee grew into the game after that initial slow start. We equalised through a VAR awarded penalty early in the second half which Simon Murray converted. Dundee made changes bringing on Ash hay, Joel Cotterill and then Scott Wright for Murray, Fin and Yogane. Sadly the changes which Celtic made were more effective and one of their substitutes scored to make it 2-1. I suppose you can’t be too disappointed running the champions so close, and it’s good to see the team at least competitive in these games this season.

Match 33. Kilmarnock 2 – 2 Dundee. Our 3rd visit of the season (2nd in the league) saw us back to the plastic pitch in Ayrshire on a windy day. Billy Koumetio came in for his first start since he was injured in the cup tie at Rugby Park in place of the suspended Ryan Astley, with Cotterill getting the nod ahead of Fin Robertson. Killie started brightly and went ahead in the 14th minutes. Dundee equalised shortly thereafter with Simon Murray heading in from Yogane’s cross. Murray then had a goal chalked off for offside, following in a Ethan Hamilton shot. That seemed to re-invigorate Killie who went 2-1 up before the break. Samuels came on at half time for the booked Halliday but Killie continued to be the better team despite playing into the wind. We then threw on Joe Westley, Scott Wright, and Ash Hay for Yan Dhanda, Cameron Congreve, and Simon Murray. Drey Wright, Samuels and Scott Wright combined to equalise, a beautiful cross pitch pass from Drey, great control from Samuels and a confident finish from Scott pulled us back to 2-2. We were awarded a penalty deep into injury time which was subject to a shockingly long VAR review, at one point I thought we were going to have to stay until the next match on the 12th May and just kick off again. Eventually Joe Westley’s penalty was saved. Kilmarnock were much improved from the turn of the year and we were both happy to leave with a draw and frustrated at not stealing all three at the end. Two draws and two defeats (against the league leader and the champions) ended this phase of the league. Only the five post-split fixtures remain this season.

Match 34. United 3-0 Dundee. The final derby of season saw us go across the road. Elvis rang the changes for this game with Brad Halliday, Drew Wright, Joel Cotterill, Tony Yogane and Simon Murray all dropping to the bench to make way for Ryan Astley, Imari Samuels, Joe Westley, Scott Wight and Ashley Hay. This gave this team an attacking look but, as it transpired, made them too weak in midfield. They scored first from a ricochet off Will Ferry who was lying unaware on the ground. We then appeared to equalise only for VAR to decide that Astley had pulled in the box or Koumetio had handled, or some other reason. Coming out at half time you’d like to think that we’d be fired up, but the second half continued to be disappointing. Elvis then brought on Simon Murray and Charlie Reilly for Scott Wright and Cam Congrieve thus moving Joe Westley to right midfield. The team seemed to still be settling into the change in formation when Will Ferry found himself in acres of space to score the second. The third followed shortly after with a back post header. This was a poor performance from Dundee, too weak in many areas and a very disappointing result. A no show really.

A disappointing month, losses in the City of Discovery to Celtic and the DABs with only the one point to show from the draw at Kilmarnock. There are four games to go and really we should be safe already, but the recent run of results has been frustrating especially considering the turnaround we saw over the winter. We finished the month in ninth place, 14 clear of Livi in bottom (so we can’t mathematically finish bottom), but only five and three points clear of Kilmarnock and St Mirren respectively. For comparison that point gap last month was 17 to Livi and 5 to both St Mirren and Kilmarnock. No excuses Dundee, three out of the remaining four at home, need to go out and finish the season on a high.

Played

Won

Drawn

Lost

For

Against

Points

3

0

1

2

3

7

1

Section completed on 1-May.

</details>

May Games

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
We played four games in May, the final month of the season. (Click to expand…)

Match 35. Dundee 1 – 0 St Mirren. The front three combined well to allow Congreve to cross and Joe Westley scored with a first time shot. Dundee played well in this period, continuing to look to go forward and we entered the break still leading. St Mirren stepped things up a bit second half and created a few half chances. McCracken seemed to injure himself clearing the ball and was substituted by Kieran O’Hara for his Dundee debut. We nearly made it 2-0 late in the second half when Ash Hay’s header is saved. This was an important game to win after the disappointment of last Sunday. The team went about their business professionally and overall we the stronger team. A win next week will see us safe.

Match 36. Dundee 3 – 0 Livingston. Dundee started with the same team apart from O’Hara who saw his first start for the injured McCracken. Livi looked dangerous on the break with a save from O’Hara and a great tackle from Halliday preventing them from taking an early lead. It was Dundee who scored first through Cameron Congreve. Dundee played well for the remainder of the first half but were unable to extend their lead. Livi started the second half strongly and Dundee sat back to absorb the pressure. Elvis made changes sending on Koumetio, Samuels and Fin Robertson. The fresh legs made a difference with Congreve’s tenacity winning the ball back and he crossed for Fin to score almost into an empty net. For the fourth time this season we were two up against Livi. A lazy challenge from Hamilton gave Livi a penalty which O’Hara saved. More substitutes combined our third goal with Ash Hay heading in Fin’s cross. In the end, a comfortable win for Dundee, and one which confirmed at least 9th spot and safety for another season.

Match 37. Kilmarnock 3 – 1 Dundee. A much changed side saw Dundee making 8 changes for a game which was meaningless for us but still important for Killie who were trying to ensure they finished above St Mirren in the playoff spot. There were no goals in an even first half. News of St Mirren being ahead filtered around the stadium and Killie took the lead on the 62nd minute. Elvis threw on Westley, Reilly and Joe Bevan moving to a back four. This seemed to give the team greater impetus and we deservedly equalised through Charlie Reilly. Charley Oosenbrugh came on for his debut but sadly conceded a soft penalty to put Killie 2-1 up, they made it 3-1 in the dying minutes. It was good to have a game when Elvis could try things but the formation didn’t really work – we had lots of possession but too little penetration.

Match 38. Dundee 3 -2 Aberdeen. The last game of the season saw the visit of Aberdeen on a Sunday at 2pm. Four changes from the experimental line-up midweek including a rare start for Charlie Reilly. Dundee took the lead early following some great work from Cam Congreve finished by Drey Wright. Despite that, and some dangerous play going forward, we went into the break 2-1 down following some poor marking from a cross and a second Aberdeen goal which had a mix of poor defending and luck. Second half, we continued to look the more dangerous time and a skilled flick from Congreve sent Reilly in on goal, his shot was saved but Joe Westley netted the rebound. Elvis made changes including sending on Luke Graham for possibly his last game in Dark Blue. Justice was confirmed in the 90th minute when Ryan Astley bulleted in a header to give Dundee a 3-2 victory and all three points. The team played well today and always looked more dangerous than Aberdeen.

We finish the season in eighth place, above last season’s 10th place but more importantly a strong improvement from the early season. The final league table show an eight point gap to the playoff spot and 21 to Livi in bottom place. Misgivings over Pressley’s appointment have largely all gone from the support and he was given a rousing reception at the Player of the Year dinner after the Aberdeen game. Since the split, with the exception of one game, we have largely done what we had to with three victories.

Played

Won

Drawn

Lost

For

Against

Points

4

3

0

1

8

5

9

Section completed on 24th May.

</details>

Summary

This has turned into a long post, thanks if you are still reading.
